How RICE Scoring Works
- Reach (1-10): How many users, customers, or internal people benefit per quarter. Higher = more people impacted.
- Impact (1-3): How much it moves the needle. 3 = massive impact, 2 = high, 1 = moderate.
- Confidence (0.5-1.0): How sure you are about reach and impact estimates. 1.0 = high confidence, 0.5 = speculative.
- Effort (1-10): Person-months of work. Higher effort = lower priority (all else equal).
RICE was developed by Intercom to eliminate gut-feel prioritization. The formula rewards high-reach, high-impact projects that can be delivered efficiently, while penalizing speculative bets (low confidence) and large investments (high effort).
