About this download

The Balanced Scorecard Template is an Excel implementation of the Kaplan & Norton management framework that translates strategy into performance metrics across four balanced perspectives: Financial, Customer, Internal Processes and Learning & Growth. Originally published in the Harvard Business Review in 1992, the Balanced Scorecard (BSC) remains the gold-standard tool for executives who want more than a purely financial view of business health and who need to align day-to-day operations with long-term strategic objectives.

The workbook gives each perspective its own tab with strategic objectives, a short narrative of what "winning" looks like, two to four outcome KPIs, leading indicators, initiatives funding those KPIs, owners and RAG status. A summary tab rolls every perspective into a one-page executive dashboard with traffic-light indicators, sparkline trends and a commentary column for the most recent reporting period. A strategy-map tab lets leadership teams visualise cause-and-effect relationships — for example, how investment in Learning & Growth (employee training) drives Internal Process improvement (cycle time), which drives Customer outcomes (NPS), which drives Financial performance (revenue and margin).

Inside you will also find a metric library of 60+ common BSC KPIs across industries (SaaS, retail, manufacturing, healthcare, professional services, non-profit), a quarterly review template, a cascading BSC worksheet for pushing company-level goals into divisions and teams, and a filled example for a fictional mid-market manufacturing firm.

This template is used by CFOs, COOs, strategy directors, PMO leads, board members and management consultants during annual planning, monthly or quarterly business reviews, board pre-reads and investor decks. It is especially valuable in organisations that have outgrown a purely KPI-dashboard approach and need to show how different measures connect to each other and to strategy.

A recommended cadence: set objectives and targets annually, review KPIs monthly at management team level, present the scorecard quarterly to the board, and refresh the full strategy map every 12–18 months as market conditions evolve.

Once your scorecard is defined, Vizually lets you visualise the underlying strategy map as an interactive board where every KPI links to the initiatives and projects driving it — so your scorecard stops being a static report and becomes a live operating system for the business.
