The charter that fits in a README and survives a quarter
If your engineers won't read it, your charter doesn't exist — no matter how thoroughly your sponsor signed it.
In a startup software project, your charter has two readers: the sponsor who signed it and the engineers who will deliver it. The enterprise charter template optimizes for the former. This template optimizes for both, which means it has to be short enough to live in the team's README without anyone groaning when they open it.
Use this when the project will run six to twelve weeks, has one to four engineers, and reports to one sponsor. Outside that envelope, switch to a heavier template.
Six-field startup software charter
0 / 6- Outcome. One sentence describing the user-facing change. 'Reduce time-to-first-deploy for new customers from 4 days to under 1 day.'
- Ship date. A specific Friday. Not a sprint, not a quarter — a date.
- In scope (5 max). Bulleted list. If the sixth bullet is tempting, it belongs in 'next.'
- Not in scope (5 max). Parallel list. The most common source of expansion in startup software is silent absorption of items from this list.
- Owner trio. Three names: Product owner, tech lead, sponsor. Not roles.
- Detective signal. One line: 'We will know we are expanding if [observable thing].' Put a calendar reminder on this; check it weekly.

Drop this template into the project README on day one. Reference it in standups when scope conversations come up. If you find yourself unable to point to a charter line in a scope debate, that's the answer to the debate — that work is out of scope until the charter is updated.
For projects where the sponsor is also a founder and the team is two engineers or fewer, the four-line founder charter replaces this one entirely. For anything larger or more politically complex, graduate to the enterprise template.
